About

Welcome to the Association for Religion, Ecology, and Society (ARES). Here religious groups and individuals can find many resources on practicing a more green lifestyle and join with others who have also become conscious of our environmental impact. The ARES links individuals, households, churches, faith groups, organizations, or any other religious entity together through a network of eco-practice, awareness, and advocacy. The ARES aims to incorporate and unite diverse religious traditions and individuals with the common purpose of earth care. All traditions have reasons to honor the earth, and whatever the reasons behind one’s environmental concerns, the ARES is a chance to join together in defense of our only environment. Membership is free and open to anyone who is interested in nature or ecology and is willing to live a more eco-conscious life.

History

The Association for Religion, Ecology, and Society was originally created as the Environmental Ministry Network. The title changed in June 2006, and the mission is the same, only broader in scope. The Environmental Ministry Network was built on environmental ministries throughout the country that work locally to initiate effective and sustainable environmental practices in their communities. An environmental ministry is any ministry, group, or committee in churches or religious bodies that address ecological issues, such as efficiency, awareness, consumption, farming, etc. Eco-practices are conscious and continuous patterns of actions aimed at combating the global environmental crisis while stifling and ameliorating the damage that humans have caused to the planet’s ecosystems. The ARES continues its advocacy of environmental ministries or eco-committees/groups in religious bodies. These groups are effective at addressing myriad environmental concerns in their communities. This carries over to individuals and households as well, as many of the eco-practices involved can be practiced by anyone from one person to a large group such as a church.
